Lenine

No doubt about it, Lenine is a musician of his time. His first solo album "O Dia Em Que Faremos Contato" starts with the sound of a modem connecting to the web followed by sequences of hip hop and techno.
Lenine is also a child of Recife (the capital of the state of Pernambuco), elements of Maracatu (the typical carnival songs and dances of the North-East of Brazil) winding through his music. But Lenine's art cannot be summed up quite so easily, as waltzes, sambas and saturated guitars are also some of his ingredients. Famous at home for his compositions written for Gilberto Gil, Dionne Warwick, Daude, Sergio Mendes and Fernanda Abreu, and for his invigorating and sold-out concerts in Rio and Sao Paulo. In 96 his work with percussionist Marcos Suzano on the album "Olho de Peixe" took them onto the stages of Europe, the United States and Japan. Lenine became a favourite with cultural television programmes following the release of "O Dia Em Que Faremos Contato" in which references to the cinema and literature are numerous. It was with this record, mixed at the Realworld studios, that Lenine was designated best new artist and won the prize for best song at the 98 Sharp Awards, the most important award ceremony in Brazilian popular music. The wonderful Chico Science had begun to bring Brazilian popular music into the 21st century with his mangue-beat before being killed in a tragic car accident. Lenine has since joined the ranks of the innovators. And his 99 vintage album "Nao Pressão" as his 2002 one "Falange Canibal"should spread the news.
